Glossary
Covering all your bike needs
Fully (full-suspension), hardtail, suspension travel? Don’t worry! We understand that many of these terms can seem complicated and not everyone’s familiar with them. That’s why we’ve compiled a brief glossary for you, where all the key terms are clearly explained.
Pedal bike
A traditional bike without a motor. Put simply: pedal power alone – unassisted by any motor, unlike an e-bike. For anyone who enjoys a more athletic ride.
Shock absorber
Part of the rear suspension (on a Fully bike). It cushions impact and enhances handling over uneven ground. Usually uses air or coil-spring set-ups.
Enduro
A type of bike built for challenging descents and extended rides involving significant elevation gain. Robust frame and generous suspension travel – well suited to alpine terrain.
Suspension travel
Indicates the extent to which the suspension (fork or shock absorber) compresses under load – measured in millimetres. Greater suspension travel = increased damping, which is especially beneficial when riding off-road.
Flow trails
Purpose-built, winding trails designed for a smooth, uninterrupted ride (i.e., flow) – free from technical obstacles. Perfect for those who appreciate a smooth ride and enjoy winding trails.
Fully
In German, a full-suspension bike is referred to as a “Fully”. A mountain bike equipped with both front (fork) and rear (shock absorber) suspension. Well-suited to demanding trails and rugged terrain.
Fork
The bike’s front suspension – enhances stability and comfort across rough terrain. There are various types, such as air-damped or oil-damped versions.
Hardtail
A mountain bike fitted with front fork suspension only – the rear remains unsprung. Lighter and more uphill-efficient – ideal for XC (cross-country) routes and moderate trails.
Trail
A narrow, usually natural trail winding through the landscape – the highlight of many mountain bike tours. From flowing to highly technical – every type of trail is on offer.
XC trails
XC = cross-country. These routes tend to be sporty and moderately technical, and are often suitable for both ascent and descent. Ideal for hardtail bikes and fitness training.
